MT5 Balance vs Equity Drawdown: Read the Hidden Loss

A steady balance line above an equity line dipping during an open trade

A trading robot can close every trade at a profit while spending an uncomfortable amount of time underwater. The balance curve records the settled outcome. Equity also reflects what is happening while positions remain open. A quiet balance chart is therefore not proof of a quiet account.

That distinction belongs near the start of an automated-trading review. When evaluating a strategy intended for an AlgoWay alert-to-execution workflow, ask what happened between entry and exit, not only what the final trade list reports. Delivering an order and choosing a tolerable exposure are separate decisions.

The account can lose value before balance changes

For a deliberately simplified account with no credit, fees, swaps, blocked funds, deposits or withdrawals during the example, use:

Equity = balance + floating profit or loss

Actual account accounting can include more components. MetaQuotes' trading-report documentation describes equity using balance, credit, commission, floating results and blocked amounts. The simplified equation below isolates the effect of an open position rather than reproducing every broker's statement.

Start with 10,000 account-currency units. Assume the following are all the relevant peaks and troughs, with no other trades:

EventBalanceFloating resultEquity
Before entry10,000010,000
Open trade moves against the account10,000-2,5007,500
Open trade recovers10,000+30010,300
Trade closes at that result10,300010,300

The balance never falls, so its drawdown is zero in this constructed path. Equity falls from 10,000 to 7,500: a drawdown of 2,500, or 25%. The final gain of 300 does not erase that earlier decline. This is arithmetic, not a recorded test or a claim that such a trade would survive a broker's margin rules.

If the trade instead closed at the trough, the floating loss would become realized and balance would fall to 7,500 too, ignoring costs. Leaving it open changes where the loss appears; it does not make the account whole.

The MT5 Strategy Tester report lists balance and equity versions of three drawdown measures:

  • Absolute: how far the series falls below the initial deposit.
  • Maximal: the largest peak-to-subsequent-trough fall in deposit currency, accompanied by the percentage for that fall.
  • Relative: the largest percentage peak-to-subsequent-trough fall, accompanied by its money amount.

For the matching balance or equity series, a peak-to-trough percentage is:

Drawdown percent = (peak - subsequent trough) / peak × 100

“Absolute” is not simply another name for the largest currency loss. Consider a separate path starting at 10,000, rising to 12,000 and falling to 10,500. It never goes below the initial deposit, so absolute drawdown is zero. The peak-to-trough fall is still 1,500, or 12.5%. Looking at the wrong row can make a real decline disappear from your summary.

The largest money fall and largest percentage fall can also occur at different times. Suppose a path falls from 10,000 to 8,000, later rises to 20,000, then falls to 17,000. The first decline is 2,000 and 20%; the second is 3,000 and 15%. On that path, maximal drawdown is 3,000 with 15%, while relative drawdown is 20% with 2,000. Do not combine the money amount from one episode with the percentage from another.

A large gap is a question to investigate

Lower balance drawdown than equity drawdown can mean open positions suffered losses that were partly or fully recovered before closing. Equity can also fall from an unrealized profit peak without ever going below the original balance. A fall from equity of 11,000 back to 10,000 is still an equity drawdown, even if the open trade ends near entry.

Neither case identifies the strategy's cause by itself. Inspect the position timeline: which trades were open together, how far price moved against them, whether exposure increased, and what exit rule was active. Several positions can contribute to one account-level dip. For the single-trade view, compare maximum adverse and favorable excursions with the account curve.

Do not infer that equity drawdown must always exceed balance drawdown in every report. The series have different peaks and can be affected by overlapping floating results and accounting events. Compare the actual paths over the same interval.

Turn the report into an automation check

  1. Save both drawdown series and their full field names. Keep the test period, initial deposit, sizing and cost assumptions with them.
  2. Find the equity trough and the preceding equity peak. Inspect all positions open across that interval, rather than only the trade that eventually booked a loss.
  3. Check whether your proposed exposure limits refer to balance, equity, a starting value or a running peak. These produce different decisions.
  4. Keep margin survival separate from a drawdown preference. MetaQuotes documents that insufficient equity to maintain positions can cause forced closure under the account's stop-out rules.

If you are ranking bots with recovery factor or profit factor, preserve each metric's stated definition. Do not silently swap equity drawdown into a balance-based ratio and compare it with the original output. The useful review shows the closed result, the open exposure it took to reach it, and the assumptions connecting the two.
